A slap on the wrist isn't a deterrent.

The failure to investigate even the most serious data breach in UK history is the final straw.

We need a strong data regulator that will take action against the government and private sector at a time of escalating threats.

We need an inquiry into the Information Commissioner's Office if we're to have data protection laws with teeth and resilience against cyber attacks.

For the last 3-4 years, the ICO has shifted away from using enforcement powers against public sector organisations except as a last resort.

Since then, the ICO's own review of this public sector approach showed “the average number of reported breaches increased by 11%” and an 8% increase in data protection complaints.

By removing the deterrence of regulatory sanctions, this approach has worsen the status quo.

The ICO refused to investigate the UK Ministry of Defence for the most serious data breach in UK history – the leaking of data on 19,000 Afghans fleeing the Taliban.

They said it was a one-off.

But what about the 49 data breaches at the MoD over the last 4 years?

        No bark. No bite.

The Information Commissioner's Office (UK) has shied away from enforcing data protection laws one too many times.

Yesterday over 70 groups and experts joined ORG's demand for an inquiry into the regulator.

Evidence shows that when enforcement goes down, breaches go up. We say enough.

Prevent ≠ safeguarding. It's about surveillance.

The UK ban on Palestine Action and a vague interpretation of 'extremism' has meant that people engaging in the Palestinian solidarity movement have been swept up into the Prevent Duty.

"The ICO’s public sector approach must end before more people are harmed by data breaches at the hands of the government and public authorities.

A data regulator that fails to deter bad practices is not worth having. We need a strong data regulator which is not afraid to take action against both the government and private sector.

We urge the Select Committee to open an inquiry.“

The details of 19,000+ people fleeing the Taliban were leaked in the most serious data breach in British history. At least 49 people have been killed as a result.

And yet the Information Commissioner's Office shrugs.

This isn't an isolated case. It's part of a trend of the ICO not using its enforcement powers.

There's a correlation between the lack of formal regulatory action and a surge in data breaches in the UK.

              Enough!

                It's time to investigate them!

                    This summit promised “safer communities”.

But it delivered something else: speed-dating with surveillance vendors, complete with a visit from the Home Secretary talking up artificial intelligence as the future of policing.

“Crime predicting” technology risks creating mass human rights violations.

We deserve real safety, not more surveillance.

We went outside the national police summit (UK) and this is what happened...

When we tried to ask delegates to talk on camera, no one wanted to.

Why? Because constant monitoring doesn’t feel safe. It feels intrusive 🤷‍♂️

Yesterday, outside the UK national policing conference members of the coalition went to deliver a simple message…

Communities don't want more surveillance. They want real safety.

The technologies being promoted inside the summit fuel racism, enable unchecked policing power, and threaten all our rights. They must be stopped.

Together we can build safety rooted in dignity, not surveillance.

Today we’ll be giving evidence at the UK Home Affairs Select Committee on Digital ID.

We’ll be arguing against the introduction of this digital surveillance infrastructure, where we’ll have to constantly prove who we are as we go about our daily lives.

Can a toddler be a terrorist?

A shocking new report has found that babies and toddlers have been referred to the UK's controversial counter-terrorism scheme Prevent hundreds of times since 2016.

ORG has shown that data collected under the Prevent programme is widely shared and retained for years even when referrals are marked ‘no further action’. Lives are being impacted from an absurdly young age.

                                  Censorship creeps onwards 🤐

Ignoring issues with the UK Online Safety Act, the government is using Henry VIII powers to engulf more content.

Aimed at blocking 'self-harm' content, algorithms will misidentify support resources and content will vanish behind age gates.

The cybersecurity wrecking ball is turning to VPNs ‼️

It's dangerous to attack a tool that can help to keep adults and children safe online.

Age-gating this tech for UK users would increase cybercrime and put under 18s at a greater risk of predators.
