NEW REPORT: The hostile environment is coded into the UK digital immigration system.

Migrants are stressed out by this complex and faulty system.

Access to housing, work and services hangs in the balance with little support from the Home Office.

The eVisa scheme is a digital-only proof of your right to live and work in the UK.

Technical glitches and data errors have a human impact – deep anxiety, fear and exclusion.

Most harmed are migrants with limited digital literacy, language barriers, disabilities and caring responsibilities.

The UK digital immigration system makes others act as an arm of the State.

Migrants often encounter employers, landlords, airline carriers and border officials who lack understanding of share codes or digital immigration processes.

Migrants have an unfair burden to fix what's beyond their control.

Migrants need to be able to prove their immigration status in any situation.

The UK Home Office must follow the recommendations of ORG and other campaigners.

Migrants need an offline version of their status that can be saved, like a QR code or print out.

The UK Home Office has failed migrants.

The eVisa scheme is founded on an incomplete and misleading Data Protection Impact Assessment, meaning foreseeable risks were not mitigated.

ORG has brought together 19 civil society groups to call on the ICO to formally investigate the resulting data protection breaches and accessibility issues.

The UK eVisa scheme is a digital-only system that checks immigration status in real time.

The DPIA is misleading. It claims eVisas are part of a 'digital by default' transformation that people can choose to use.

But it removes all physical documentation and users can't opt out of digital methods.

                @openrightsgroup@social.openrightsgroup.org

The UK eVisa scheme has been riddled with data errors. This represents a huge breach of sensitive data and a system failure.

Migrants are prevented from proving their legal status and locked out of accounts with little Home Office support.

They can't prove their right to work, rent, study, travel or access services. The DPIA should have identified and mitigated these risks.

The open letter also argues that the UK Home Office failed to assess or mitigate:

🔴 Risk of face images being used for matching, automated checks or shared with third parties that may combine them with other datasets.

🔴 Risks to people without smartphones or who are digitally excluded because of disability, their age or socio-economic reasons.

🔴 Risks to people subject to partner coercion.

Our pressure on the government to back down on Digital IDs worked.

Even if it's voluntary, Digital ID still creates a surveillance infrastructure.

This could be expanded later on as a requirement to access public services.

As we've seen with eVisas, digitalising interactions with the UK State without physical backups creates serious problems.

The UK government's climbdown over mandatory Digital ID is a victory for ORG and other groups that warned of the threats to everyone's civil liberties.

                            BUT questions still remain.

Despite this latest U-turn, neither the scheme nor the giant pricetag have gone away entirely.

We need more transparency about when and how AI is being used in the UK asylum process.

We need to know what safeguards are in place to prevent errors and who is accountable when AI gets it wrong.

Without these vulnerable people will be harmed and these tools will be rolled out across government.

The use of AI tools to clear the asylum backlog prioritises speed over accuracy.

The UK Home Office’s own evaluation reveals that 9% of AI-generated summaries were so flawed they had to be removed from the pilot.

And 23% of caseworkers lacked full confidence in the tools’ outputs.

The UK Home Office has a track record of using controversial tech to target migrants.

They're not even telling people that AI is being used on their asylum application.

Using these tools in critical situations without safeguarding, transparency and accountability could lead to fatal results.

AI isn't neutral. It can be easily tweaked to produce preferred results.

Alongside the UK Home Office's ever-increasing hostile narratives, we ask how can migrants trust such automation?
