Something that bothers me about the push for digital sovereignty is that a lot of it seems to be motivated by nationalism and anti-American sentiment. That's why we need standards and federation, so instead of just switching to an instant messaging server run by some European tech company, I can keep using my self-hosted one.

@daniel I agree that it should be about actual sovereignty.
However, trust in the US has really been lost. Permanently for the foreseeable future. And American liberalism and capitalism (and I‘m really no socialist) have created some of the most evil companies on this planet. The EU offers some hefty regulation on privacy. So I understand every European, especially non-tech savvy people, who just opt for a European alternative.

Anti GAFAM yes. Also care must be taken with companies in the US because the government is likely to demand data from them. This does apply to non US companies, but the US government is one of least trustworthy in the world.
Here in France, the adoption of open source, decentralized data, and companies like Tuta and Proton as well as the fediverse, are the answers that people are finding.
Jabber certainly fits within that as well.
To say digital sovereignty is anti-american is misguided. The US cannot be trusted and the world is astonished by the reveil and saddened by the truth of it.

I think we’d be better off shifting the debate from questioning FAANG to questioning capitalism as a whole.

@daniel XMPP never worked for me. The main problem was that adaption of encryption was slow. so some clients supported #OTR but others declined,me cause it was not backed by standards of XMPP. But there was never a working XMPP encryption as long as I watched and used Jabber clients. I think that was the point where I switched to Telegram. Often in open source there is a lack of practical thinking and projects don't agree on the best solution and let proprietary projects win.

I had a really nice day out in London yesterday. Picked up the DVD of the second season of Silicon Valley, before heading to a Linux user group meeting which was really good fun.
There were contrasting views, but also understanding and appreciation. Aside from some useful feedback for the team at @mozilla , I met some good people (including @matthew ).
Leaving the pub, I had a swift Nandos at Waterloo, before listening to my Bandcamp Friday purchase on the train home. A good day out.
I hope to be there once I finish with work, probably a couple of hours after it starts.

FOSS Meetup in #London on Saturday was a success, we ultimately had 9 people attend that day.That you so much to those who attended, and also those who helped with outreach. I am aiming to run another one sometime in October, but this time with more infrastructure.
Also again, thanks to the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) for managing to get the sticker package to us on short notice.

In other languages, I slightly dread starting a debug session because I have to remember the flag to pass extra args, add all the breakpoints on startup etc. This leads to long sessions because I don't want to lose the investment I've put into my breakpoints.
But in Python, I have much shorter debug sessions and I can get right to a point of invocation really quickly, verify something, and close the debugger straight away.
I use the repl much more because I can end up in a repl right with the context and variables that I need.
Defining more breakpoints within the repl is really nice to unpack nested datastructures in the same way it would be done in the code:

The government must change the Terrorism Act so future ones don't make similar proscriptions with worse consequences.
With the ban still in place, we need to hear how Ofcom expects platforms to remove #PalestineAction content.
